As we head into the fall season, my mind starts shifting towards the need for coziness, warmth, and grounding. I’ve been in the process of recreating and redefining the space in which I currently work and write in. Just as we often do spring cleaning heading into the warmer months, September can also be a great time to clear out clutter and reorganize. I’ve been thinking about the elements that help me feel clear-headed and peaceful so that I can feel more focus and inner connection. There are several easy ways to create a beautiful space that truly serves you.
A few things that really matter to me when creating a sacred space are to have a beautiful scent, inspiring visuals, and comfortable lighting. Whether you’re able to create your own cozy “nook” in your living room, multi-purpose room, bedroom, or a random corner, it doesn’t really matter. Even if it’s a special chair with a small end table where you can read a book, sip your coffee and decompress…you can get as creative as you want with the space that you have.
I’ve missed traveling over the last couple of years, so I recently purchased photos of places I want to visit in Europe. I placed one of them near my writing space and every time I see the image of a woman on a London street I feel a sense of hope and excitement around getting back there one day. This time of year I also start using more candles and essential oils. I’ll often use seasonal scents that have cinnamon and nutmeg or that remind me of the outdoors. I also love a lot of natural light, so I’ve situated my desk by a window and use a small ceramic table lamp that I love for writing at night.
Even when searching for storage containers, I’ve been conscious of the colors I’ve chosen and opted for baskets and natural materials that exude warmth. If you love music, that is another great way to add ambience that may help inspire you or bring a sense of calm. Defining the space around you does not have to involve a lot of costly items or become a huge project. It can be a few of your favorite things that feel like “you” and that can be switched out over time. With the fall season approaching you might feel drawn to a floral arrangement with fall colors or a comfy throw blanket that you can wrap yourself in.
Allow yourself to have some fun with it and really consider how you want your space to make you feel and what your intentions are. Are you desiring to feel inspired, safe, energized, calm or cozy? What colors are you drawn to? Do you crave a lot of light or prefer darker lighting? Maybe there are meaningful photos you can frame or works of art that lift your mood and soothe your heart. Or perhaps its about clearing items out and having less. It’s really about creating a space for yourself that you can sink into and that holds supportive energy. Never underestimate the power of your surroundings and how putting intention into your space can help support your mental and emotional wellbeing. If you’re planning to revamp or reclaim a space for yourself, I hope that some of these ideas help inspire you and offer a creative starting point!
