At a recent wellness workshop, I taught about four of my favorite essential oils for winter time, and I wanted to share them with you, as well!
Winter is not only a shift for our physical bodies, but also greatly impacts our mental and emotional wellbeing. It’s easy to feel under the weather more frequently, become less active, and struggle with the winter blues. For this reason, I’ve chosen oils that can really uplift your spirits and support you in shifting your mood!
One of my other favorite mood-lifting remedies is the use of affirmations. Setting an affirmation for yourself is another way to create a conscious shift in your mood and mentality. So for each oil that I share, I’m going to give you an affirmation that you can use along with it – whether you are applying it on your body, taking it internally, or diffusing it. You can say the intention out loud several times or repeat it quietly in your mind, then allow the oil and affirmation to do their amazing work!
One of my favorite books regarding essential oils and the emotions is called, Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils, by Carolyn L. Mein. Much of the information on emotions and affirmations that I’m about to share with you I’ve learned from this fabulous book.
- Lemon Essential Oil
- Peppermint Essential Oil
- Thieves Essential Oil
- Joy Essential Oil
Lemon is a wonderfully refreshing and uplifting oil and is also very versatile. I highly recommend diffusing it any time of day for a pick-me-up. Many of us have difficulty drinking enough water during the winter season. One way to assist with this issue is to add a few drops of lemon essential oil to your water! The flavor makes the water more enticing and tasty. Just make sure it’s in a glass or stainless steal container so that your cup doesn’t get eaten away! Staying well hydrated is so important to your overall health and mental state, so this is a great way to make use of lemon!
Emotions: Throughout winter, if you are struggling with feelings of emptiness, sadness, feeling stuck, or frustration, lemon is the recommended oil to help in releasing these emotions.
As you are using lemon, you can use the affirmation, “I deeply honor myself.”
Peppermint is another very uplifting oil. It is also great for supporting mental focus and digestion. If I’ve had a long day, peppermint always helps me feel more awake and rejuvenated when I put a few drops in my diffuser. This is another oil that you can ingest, so I recommend putting a drop or two in your water, tea, or hot chocolate. Yum! During winter, it is also common to deal with sinus issues. With a few inhales of peppermint, you’re breathing will be supported in no time!
Emotions: If you are struggling with feelings of failure, fear of dependence, or rigidity, peppermint essential oil is recommended to help release these emotions.
While using peppermint oil, you can use the affirmation, “I am self-sufficient and I accept personal growth.”
Thieves is one of my all-time favorite essential oils. When I diffuse it, I’m reminded of fresh baked cookies and instantly a sense of warmth takes over my home. This is a blend of clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus radiata. Thieves is known for supporting a healthy immune system. Perfect for getting through the winter months! This is another oil that can be taken internally. You can add 2 drops of Thieves to a teaspoon of honey and take it every day or when you feel that you may need it. It is both tasty and soothing. You can also use Thieves as a safe natural cleaner for your home!
Emotions: If you are dealing with feelings of uncertainty, it is recommended to use Thieves in support of releasing this emotion.
While using Thieves, you can use the affirmation, “I am able to see with clarity.”
This list wouldn’t be complete without Joy! Joy is a blend of bergamot, ylang ylang, geranium, lemon, coriander, tangerine, roman chamomile, palmarosa, and rose. This oil is refreshing, uplifting, and inspires the heart! I have turned to this essential oil often, and I recommend diffusing or applying it topically whenever you are having a particularly difficult day.
Emotions: If you are feeling anxiety, disappointment, or grief, it is recommended that Joy can help support in releasing these emotions.
While using Joy, you can use the affirmation, “I allow myself to feel at peace within.”
The essential oils that I personally use are Young Living, and the two blends listed above are specific to this brand. I trust in Young Living because of the company’s 20+ year history and the quality of pure 100% therapeutic grade oils. I strongly recommend only therapeutic grade when you are applying oils on your body or taking them internally.
